Exercising To Relax

Did you know that you could exercise to relax?   Believe it or not, exercise relaxes the body both physically and mentally.   Here are some beneficial ways to relax.

Physical Activity
Regular physical activity keeps you healthy as it brings remarkable changes to your body, metabolism, heart and spirits.     Regular aerobic exercise is known to have the capacity to exhilarate and relax, provide stimulation and calm, to counter depression and dissipate stress.    Also as your weight decreases, your strength and stamina increases ultimately improving your self-image and self-confidence.   Aerobic exercises can also reduce stress.  Check out this Tony Horton workout.   Before you start though enlist the advice of your medical practitioner.

Mental Activity
Stress maybe necessary for creativity, learning, and survival.   But it becomes harmful when it interrupts the healthy state of stability, which your nervous system needs to remain in balance.    To effectively release stress however, we need to activate the body’s natural relaxation response by practicing, mediation, deep breathing, rhythmic exercises and yoga.     When you fit these into your everyday life you will remove everyday stress, boost your energy and improve your mood.   Apart from relieving stress mental exercises is considered beneficial to ward off Alzheimer’s disease.    You can enroll in various online exercise programs or just engage in a lot of reading, completing crossword puzzles and word sleuths to keep your brain active.

Yoga Activity
Yoga is mind-body practice that combines stretching exercises, controlled breathing and relaxation.    Yoga has been known to:

  1. Reduces stress and anxiety at the same time enhancing your mood and over-all sense of well-being.
  2. Improve fitness, balance, flexibility, strength and allows you to be able to do a range of motion.    With regular practice you’re less likely to injure yourself in various physical activities.
  3.  Manage and reduce the on-set of chronic conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, depression and pain.

To get started make sure and seek medical advice and especially for beginners it is helpful to learn with an instructor.    This is necessary since everyone’s body is different, and you need an instructor who is experienced enough to attend to your needs.    Remember, your safety is important.    However, if you want to practice at home you can check this video out, or ask your instructor to recommend some movements that are right for you.

After all that remember that a good night's sleep contributes a lot to your relaxation!
